Prof. Dr. Thomas Kohl ist Professor am Karlsruher Institut für Technologie, KIT. Er ist Inhaber des Lehrstuhls für Geothermie am Institut für Angewandte Geowissenschaften und Topicsprecher des Topics Geothermische Energiesysteme am KIT im Programm Erneuerbare Energien gemäß der Definition der Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft.
Nach seinem Abschluss in Geophysik an der Technischen Universität Karlsruhe wurde er als Forschungsassistent am CNRS in Paris auf dem Gebiet der Seismologie tätig. 1992 promovierte er an der ETH Zürich über gekoppelte Prozesse in tiefen Geothermie-Systemen. Nach seiner Habilitationsschrift wurde er 1999 als ausgewiesener Experte für den Bereich Sub-Surface und speziell für geothermische Systeme als Dozent an die ETH Zürich berufen. Sein Code FRACTure über gekoppelte hydraulisch-thermisch-mechanische Verfahren, die weltweit eingesetzt werden, wurde zur Charakterisierung von gebrochenem Gestein in komplexem Untergrund eingesetzt. Als Mitbegründer der GEOWATT AG in Zürich war er von 2003 bis 2011 CEO des mittelständischen ETH-Spin-off-Unternehmens. Hier arbeitete Kohl in europäischen und nationalen Forschungsprojekten mit, verantwortlich für ganze Arbeitspakete, realisierte er zahlreiche geothermische Projekte in der Schweiz, Deutschland, Ungarn, den USA und Frankreich.
Am KIT in Karlsruhe liegt ein Forschungsschwerpunkt auf der Untersuchung geomechanischer Aspekte in geklüfteten Geotermiereservoiren. Daher sind der Ursprung und die Auswirkungen der induzierten Seismizität und die Auswirkungen auf das Reservoir von großem Interesse. Unter Ausnutzung der außergewöhnlichen Möglichkeiten der umliegenden Geothermie-Projekte werden systematische Datenanalysen in Verbindung mit der tektonischen Situation im Rheingraben durchgeführt. In den vergangenen Jahren hat sich das KIT zu einer international renommierten Institution in der Geothermie-Forschung entwickelt. T. Kohl hat mehrere hochrangige Konferenzen und Workshops organisiert und ist einer der Initiatoren des European Geothermal Workshop (EGW), der gemeinsam mit der Universität Straßburg veranstaltet wird. T. Kohl ist Mitglied in mehreren wissenschaftlichen Gremien in Deutschland und Frankreich. Am KIT hat er mehrere Lehrmodule eingerichtet und engagiert sich in internationalen Masterprogrammen. Darüber hinaus ist er Chefredakteur des Geothermal Energy Journal sowie mehrerer Sonderausgaben von Geothermics, Mitglied der International Heat Flow Kommission IASPEI und EERA - JPGE Vorstandsmitglied. Er hielt zahlreiche Vorträge auf hochrangigen wissenschaftlichen Konferenzen und ist Autor von mehr als 70 rezensierten Manuskripten in renommierten Fachzeitschriften. Außerdem arbeitet er mit vielen (inter)nationalen Industrieprojekten zusammen. Seit 2017 ist er Sprecher des Arbeitskreis Geothermie der Deutschen Geophysikalischen Gesellschaft.
