Prof. Dr. Christoph Hilgers ist Universitätsprofessor für Strukturgeologie und Tektonik und geschäftsführender Direktor des Instituts für Angewandte Geowissenschaften am KIT. Seine Interessen sind Energiesysteme, Rohstoffeffizienz, Vorhersage von Reservoir-Qualitäten, transnationale Hochschulbildung sowie Prozess- und strategische Analysen.

Nach seinem Studium der Geologie an der RWTH Aachen und der Angewandten Strukturgeologie & Gesteinsmechanik am Imperial College London arbeitete er als wissenschaftlicher Assistent an der RWTH Aachen, von wo aus er an das WZL, Qualitätsmanagement & Fertigungsmesstechnik wechselte. Dort entwickelte er die GUtech Oman als Teil der OES LLC, die er anschliessend in Muskat, Oman, aufbaute und leitete. Vor seinem Ruf an das KIT war er Professor für Reservoir-Petrologie an der RWTH Aachen.

Er ist Mitglied verschiedener professioneller und interdisziplinärer Initiativen wie dem ThinkTank Industrielle Ressourcenstrategien, RohstoffWissen e.V. und der wissenschaftlichen Gesellschaft für die Up- und Downstream Industrie DGMK e.V..

Die GSL ist die älteste geologische Gesellschaft und wurde 1807 in London gegründet. Zu Beginn des 19 Jh. bildeten sich auch in Deutschland zahlreiche naturwissenschaftliche Vereine, darunter der 1840 gegründete Naturwissenschaftliche Verein Karlsruhe. 1848 folgte die Gründung der ältesten deutschen geologischen Gesellschaft in Berlin, der heutigen DGGV. 1871 wurde der OGV in Gaggenau-Bad Rotenfels durch Kollegen aus Karlsruhe, Freiburg, Heidelberg und Mannheim gegründet, kurz nach der Einbindung des teilautonomen Grossherzogtums Badens an das deutsche Kaiserreich. Die 1917 gegründete AAPG ist die älteste und eine der größten angewandten geologischen Gesellschaften weltweit. Die 1957 gegründete SPE ist mit mehr als 160.000 Mitgliedern in 140 Ländern die weltweit größte Vereinigung mit Schwerpunkt Rohstoffexploration und -produktion. Die 1948 gegründete DGMK e.V. ist die wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft für die Up- und Downstream Industrie und Nationales Kommittee des World Petroleum Councils. Die 1946 gegründete ASQ ist in mehr als 130 Ländern der Welt vertreten und mit mehr als 80.000 Mitgliedern die größte Vereinigung im Qualitätsmanagement.
